Ordinariate at School of the Annunciation Foundation Mass
Tuesday 9th September 2014

The Ordinary, Mgr Keith Newton, and five other Ordinariate priests were among the concelebrants at the foundation Mass on 8 September for the School of the Annunciation, a centre for adult formation at Buckfast Abbey in Devon, set up in response to the Church's call for a New Evangelisation.

The Mass was celebrated by Cardinal George Pell, one of the eight cardinals appointed by the Pope to reform the Vatican.
Bishop Mark O'Toole of Plymouth and Bishop Philip Egan of Portsmouth were also present.

In his sermon, the Australian Cardinal, who, along with Bishop O'Toole, is a patron of the School of the Annunciation, described it as a "brave and important" initiative to preach the Gospel anew to the people of the 21st century. But he warned its founders that they should "expect attacks from the Devil".

The Catholic Herald carried a full report of Cardinal Pell's sermon in which, the paper says, he praised the institution for its mission of Catholic formation, catechesis, apologetics, witness, proclamation and worship. The paper goes on to quote him as saying: "All of these are opposed by the Evil One, by the spirit of evil, by the Devil, who has been reintroduced into public discourse by Pope Francis"

The other Ordinariate priests present at the Mass were Fr Ian Hellyer, Fr Simon Chinery, Fr Colin Furness, Mgr David Silk and Fr Bernard Sixtus.

In a further example of the growing ties between the School of the Annunciation and the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, Fr Hellyer, who leads the Buckfast Ordinariate group, has been asked by the head of the school, to give one of four Advent addresses to be broadcast by EWTN. The talk was recorded at Buckfast on 9 September.

Fr Ian Hellyer wrote an excellent account of the school's foundation Mass, which can be read here
