Portugal Week in London and the Central London Ordinariate Group
Monday 13th June 2016

Portugal Week in London and the Central London Ordinariate Group

As a result of being heavily involved with celebrations to mark Portugal week in London, the first week in June was very busy indeed at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and St Gregory in Warwick Street, the home of the Central London Ordinariate Group.

On Sunday 5th of June a beautiful mass was celebrated at 10:30 to mark the beginning of Portugal week. With splendid music and an atmosphere of devotion centred on Our Lord the Mass celebrated by our Ordinary Monsignor Keith Newton was well attended most notably by the Portuguese ambassador to the United Kingdom, Joao de Vallera. It was fantastic that many of the Portuguese members of the congregation came in national dress and it really was indeed a fantastic way for the start of Portugal week in London to be celebrated.

A wide range of other events took place in London to celebrate Portugal week and on Friday 10th June the closing event, the Portugal Day concert by the Anglo Portuguese Ensemble took place at 19:30 at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and St Gregory Warwick Street, the group's resident base.

The ensemble is a result of a collaboration between the Portuguese embassy in the United Kingdom, the church of Our Lady of the Assumption and St Gregory in Warwick Street and young British and Portuguese musicians living in London. The talented string musicians entertained all present with some delightful music that most certainly impressed those present. Again the event was attended by the Portuguese Ambassador and a reception followed the main event. During the reception Monsignor Keith Newton made a speech in which he said to all those present how great indeed the Anglo Portuguese Ensemble is, taking note of the fact it is a great way to bring people together and develop friendships which is a very important aspect of our Christian living. Monsignor Newton also spoke directly to the Ambassador who is due to retire and return to Portugal later this year and thanked him for his friendship and all that he had done to help make the venture possible, a small gift was presented to the Ambassador and the Ambassador made it quite clear that despite retiring from the United Kingdom this visit to the Church of Our Lady and the Assumption and St Gregory in London would not be the last.

A note of thanks must go to the following sponsors who help to make events involving the Anglo Portuguese Ensemble possible, the Embassy of Portugal in the United Kingdom, Booth Wealth Management Ltd and Caixa Geral de Depositos as well as the many other individuals who always work so hard to make these events both possible and a great success. Friendship, solidarity and hospitality must be central aims of our Christian living and the Anglo Portuguese Ensemble strives to achieve just that.

Another series of concerts and events is being planned for 2016/2017 starting in the Autumn and publicity will follow soon.
