St Barnabas Society to Provide £100,000 for Ordinariat
Tuesday 12th April 2011

The St Barnabas Society has announced that it has set aside £100,000 to help Church of England ministers joining the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham. For many of these priests, deacons, and religious, resignation from their Church of England ministry means leaving their homes and losing their income. The money provided by the Society from its already diminishing reserves will ensure that the bold and trusting step of coming into full communion with the Catholic Church does not place an impossible burden on ministers or their families. The St Barnabas Society together with Mgr Keith Newton, Ordinary, Mgr John Broadhurst and Mgr Andrew Burnham will distribute the £100,000 to the clergy and religious in response to their individual needs in the period between their reception into the Catholic Church at Easter and their ordination at Pentecost. Funded by donations from Catholic congregations, individuals, and legacies, the St Barnabas Society has for many years been helping other former clergy and religious from a variety of denominations who have become Catholic to the tune of over £400,000 a year, since this step of faith costs them not only their jobs but also their homes as well. Owing to the needs arising from the establishment of the Ordinariate, the Society expects to provide additional sums in the future. It trusts that the unfailing generosity of the Catholic faithful will underwrite this continuing support for those whom God calls into full communion with the Catholic Church and help to replenish its reserves. Archbishop Vincent Nichols said: "May I express my deep appreciation to the Board of The St Barnabas Society for the allocation of £100,000 for the needs of the clergy of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham. "It is a very generous gesture and one that will be widely appreciated, It is a concrete expression of the generosity which the Holy Father asked us to show towards those who are seeking full communion in the Catholic Church". Monsignor Keith Newton said that he was absolutely delighted with the generosity of The St Barnabas Society in helping those clergy from the Church of England who will be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church this Easter and are hoping to be ordained as priests of the Ordinariate around Pentecost. "They are making great sacrifices and it is a relief to know that The St Barnabas Society is so willing to help in cases of financial need."
